Enlisted Mt Forest 10-12-15 (age 33 years 9 months). On 153rd Nominal Roll 5-2-16, transfer to 216th noted. Guelph Mercury 30-5-16 notes transfer to 216th Battalion. Went overseas with 216th aboard SS Scandinavian, arrived England 29-4-17. Assigned 3rd Reserve for Training and Administration. Wounded 2-10-17, shrapnel wounds to groin and hips. (Ypres) Pte Couttie was slightly gassed and received a hip wound while in France with the 1st Railway Battalion reports Mt Forest Register 28-3-18. Orangeville Banner 16-9-20 reports enlisted 153rd but because of short stature, not allowed overseas. Transferred to Toronto Bantams (216th Battalion), went overseas and was wounded. Name listed on 216th Sailing List 18 April 1917, SS Scandinavian, Halifax N.S. Returned to Canada aboard SS Megantic 11-2-18, Quebec City, PQ. Medical Board Toronto 20-4-18 discharge physically unfit. Returned to Mount Forest. Killed in a rooming house fire 1920.
